Video mapping bij Foam

An elderly naked man and woman look at you from the large screen. Then something starts to happen: they begin to dance, following the heartbeat of the visitor. In Travelling of the Heart, a virtual space of changing images and sound respond to the viewer, whose input is needed for the installation to function. Both the tempo and the images are forever shifting, no single second is ever the same.

A baby emerges from the deep black, floating very slowly towards you. His open attitude and outstretched arms invite you to embrace him. The baby then detaches from the void, floating for a moment as a fragile sculpture – timeless and silent in space. Slowly, he disappears back into the darkness. The whole is accompanied by a richly dissonant score, sound and image evoking multiple associations. Feelings of fragility, beauty and desolation merge for an experience of quiet intensity.

Beginning on the 14 January, leading international video artists started a three-week display of 3D projections in the centre of Amsterdam – onto the EYE Filmmuseum building. The video artists were competing as part of The World Masters of Projection Mapping (WMPM) competition, a joint venture initiative from Amsterdam Light Festival, Integrated Systems Events and RAI Amsterdam.

From the dark depths of the well in the ancient crypt a small child appears. Very slowly, as if he is floating in the water, he rises upwards. The child then disappears again, into the darkness below. He comes up for a second time. Again he moves upwards along the sides of the stone well. The metal grating, however, prevents him from ascending any further. The well of the Lebuinus Church and the River IJssel are connected historically and climatically. When the IJssel is high, the crypt fills with water. The 3D stereoscopic installation ‘Well’ reveals this connection in a special way. The installation was made for the IJsselbiënnale (IJssel Biennial) 2017.

A man or a woman moves naked with a figure wrapped in black which steps in and out of the dark surroundings. The eight display screens set in small pillars with sound stand in a circle surrounded by empty space. The slow motion movements strikes you as almost graphical. The bodies are looking for balance. To embrace or reject, to fight or surrender. The seconds tick away.

The brand new attraction ‘Brew You Ride’ part of Heineken Experience. The entire process of brewing, bottling and enjoying your Heineken beer is brought to life in a new audiovisual journey. Commissioned by Heineken Experience and Heijmerink Wagemakers. Northernlight made a spatial and visual design, content was created by Tamschik Media + Space and BeamSystems designed and realised the overall audio-visual installation. The impact of visual story telling, soundscapes and a route through different rooms make this a unique experience. Go Brew You Ride!

While we are looking upwards, below and around us, the bodies reach us from an endless deep. Very slowly. What are they, these glimmers of light in the darkness? Stars? Angels? The closer they get the more form they acquire. They are very young children, some of them still babies. One by one they come, and they go. Free of the background they float in space. Touchable with the fingertips until they disappear again.

Despite this peaceful beginning it turns out that Once So Bright is not quite so heavenly after all. Particularly as the images present you with an atmosphere of paradoxes: light/dark; reality/illusion; transparency/lack of transparency; close by/far away; happy/sorrowful. The music of composer David Dramm, dissonant yet soothing at the same time, strengthens this perception.

Once So Bright is about the loss of a dearly loved child and the wish to bring him/her back. Everlasting life on earth for your dear ones – for many a dream. Yet a dream which is becoming closer to reality each day. With the unlimited possibilities of biotechnology – cloning – and Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a solution. This work of art poses existential questions for science and art. It is a culture-critical work which makes visible the relationship between man and emerging technologies.

Arent Weevers is a 3D pioneer in the Netherlands and exhibits regularly at home and abroad. With ‘Once So Bright’ he is conducting research on the dept possibility with an unique combination of 3D-stereoscopic high-speed recording and Virtual reality.

The title ‘Ecce Homo’ (‘Behold the Man’) refers to the biblical story John. In this 3D holographic video installation the passage from the Passion of Jesus is given a contemporary touch. Without the crown of thorns and the purple robe, not an innocent young man but a naked little boy in all his pain and sorrow is shown to the ‘world’, floating upside down. Weevers’ media art is a search for strength in vulnerability.

Standing in the middle, a heavily pregnant young woman. Her hair partly covers her naked body to her ankles. She peers past you, with no expression on her face. From underneath, a gusty wind begins to blow, wafting her hair slowly upwards into the air. Suddenly, the woman bends slightly forward, her left arm in front of her abdomen, and grimaces painfully. Losing her balance, she falls sideways out of the frame until only black remains.

Interactive anti-surveillance machine.plplpl.pl analyses the behaviour and responds to the audience with actions, based on digital surveillance algorithms. An experimental man-machine interaction project developed, prototyped, tested and constructed in collaboration with BeamLab.
